DSN Group Supported Women Empowerment and Preserved Local Culture

Muara Wahau, July 4, 2024 – The DSN Group, in collaboration with the Kayan Umaq Lekan women’s MSME group in Miau Baru Village, Kombeng District, East Kutai Regency, East Kalimantan, conducted a workshop on traditional Dayak Kayan crafts. The workshop held at the Kayan Umaq Lekan MSME Secretariat, and it was attended by 12 women group members and focused on developing local wisdom and resources.

During the workshop, participants received training on making Taq A (traditional Dayak Kayan skirts), Hung/Serahung (head coverings), and Tat (woven baskets). The training aimed to equip participants with the skills to independently produce traditional Dayak Kayan crafts.

Anjar Dwi Nugroho, Regional Head of Muara Wahau, DSN Group Kaltim, stated that the company continually promotes women’s empowerment as agents of change to accelerate the economic independence of communities. This event is part of the company’s women’s empowerment agenda, following a similar program involving 20 participants in Nehas Liah Bing Village in April 2024.

“This women’s empowerment effort is expected to enhance the community’s economy and welfare while preserving local cultural knowledge and traditions. These skills are part of the intangible cultural heritage that must be maintained and passed on to younger generations to prevent them from being lost,” added Anjar.

After the training, participants were challenged to develop various products based on the material they had learned. By the end of the challenge, participants successfully produced beautiful and economically valuable crafts, including 5 Taq A, 15 Tat, and 7 Serahung.

Sulin Sulaiman, the women’s group coordinator and event participant coordinator, welcomed the empowerment program. She believes this initiative is strategic in helping the community, especially women in Miau Baru Village, grow without losing their cultural roots.

Through this empowerment activity, the company encourages women’s involvement in village economic development, both in agriculture and creative economy activities. The company also promotes the involvement of women in cooperatives and credit unions, even encouraging them to take on leadership roles.

DSNG is also committed to fulfilling women’s rights, including establishing a Gender Committee. The Gender Committee regularly provides socialization and training related to the fulfillment and protection of women’s and children’s rights within the company’s operations and surrounding villages. By the end of 2023, 377 women committee leaders representing all DSNG subsidiaries in the palm oil and wood products business units had been established.
