DSN Group Supported Independent Farmers in Sustainable Practices

Muara Wahau, June 15, 2024 – In an effort to ensure that independent farmers comply with sustainable palm oil standards, DSN Group provided guidance to palm oil farmers in Muara Wahau. This initiative was carried out in collaboration with local farmer groups and cooperatives. The guidance covered topics such as Good Agriculture Practices (GAP), cooperative governance, pest control, occupational health and safety, forest and land fire prevention, and hazardous waste management.

Since the inception of this support program in September 2021, DSN Group has assisted more than 5,000 independent farmers in implementing sustainable practices. These farmers are spread across various areas in the Kongbeng and Muara Wahau sub-districts, with their numbers increasing each year.

“We are committed to ensuring that sustainable practices are applied throughout the DSN Group supply chain, including by independent farmers who supply Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB) to the company. One of the core values instilled by the founders of DSN Group is to advance together with the community. Thus, supporting independent farmers is crucial for helping them adopt sustainable practices on their farms,” stated Anjar Dwi Nugroho, Regional Head, East Kalimantan.

DSN Group’s efforts in supporting the community received positive feedback. Widyo, the coordinator of a cooperative certified by RSPO and ISPO, expressed that the achievements of his cooperative are hoped to be replicated by other independent farmer cooperatives. Widyo also added that well-implemented sustainable practices could offer significant benefits, including improved FFB productivity.

DSN Group was committed to providing training and capacity-building to independent farmers to achieve sustainable palm oil goals. DSN Group equipped partner farmers with the necessary knowledge and skills, including the implementation of NDPE (No Deforestation, No Peats, and No Exploitation) policies and best practices in palm oil plantation management.

In the second half of 2023, Her Excellency Ina Lepel, the German Ambassador to Indonesia, visited the plantations in Muara Wahau. This visit was related to the collaboration between GIZ and DSN Group for training and certifying independent farmers in Muara Wahau.
