Sustainability-related investments

DSN Group is committed to the principles of responsible investment. We will invest continually to reduce or mitigate our impact to the environment and bring positive impact to the community where we operate. We want to do more with less and in this journey we shall strive to report to our stakeholders our progress, especially with our efforts to increase the use of renewable energy and resources.

Renewables

In the Palm Oil Business Unit, we utilise palm oil mill effluent (POME), shell biomass waste, and palm kernel fibre to generate various renewable energy sources. Meanwhile, in the Wood Products Business Unit, we utilise solar power to diversify our electrical energy sources for operations.

We successfully started the operation of our first Bio-CNG Plant in 2021. Then in 2022, we started building our Methane Capture and Second Bio-CNG plant at our palm oil plantation in Muara Wahau. In 2023, this plant utilised the methane emissions captured in total from 112,929 L of POME to produce Biomethane Compressed Natural Gas (Bio-CNG), which can be used as a renewable energy source. The Bio-CNG produced has generated 7,159,846 kWh of electricity which is used for palm oil mill operations, offices, and employee housing.

The Company has invested in the development of fuel conversion technology for diesel vehicles, enabling the transition to more cost-effective Bio-CNG powered vehicles. Trials using Bio-CNG fuel on Mitsubishi’s FFB hauling trucks confirmed that the Bio-CNG fuel from the converted trucks is equally efficient when compared to the manufacturer’s Bio-CNG trucks and the company expects to save around 8 million litres of diesel per year while reducing emissions by 23.78 thousand tCO e through the implementation of the technology.

In the wood products business unit, the Company developed renewable energy development in the form of a rooftop solar power plant (PLTS) at the WP Flooring factory with an installed capacity of 2 MegaWatt. By the end of 2023, this rooftop solar power plant has generated electricity that is used to fulfil our operations. With the installation of this rooftop solar power plant, the Company has the potential to reduce emissions equivalent to 1,035 tCO2e per year.

Roads & Access

DSN Group invests a considerable amount of resource in roads and access to its estates and mills. Better roads and access delivers many levels of efficiencies, right down from increasing fuel efficiencies to ensuring quality fresh fruit bunches and raw materials that in turn allows us to produce high quality premium CPO. DSN Group has also helped provide public infrastructure, including roads, bridges, public area, and places of worship. For the purposes of transporting FFB, PK, CPO, and PKO, also logistics, DSN Group builds access roads by paying attention to safety principles, both for employees and the community. As much as possible, DSN Group has separated the production access road from the road used by the employees and the community to build in safety and promote efficiencies. Road maps and signs have been created and socialized. Several points of intersection of the production roads and the roads used by employee/ community are given special signs and security, such as speed bumps to slow down the vehicle speed.

People

Employees are a major asset and important stakeholder for us. Therefore, DSN Group actively practices diversity in the workplace and does not tolerate discrimination based on religion, disability, gender, sexual orientation, political persuasion, race, marital status, ethnicity or age in recruitment, dismissal or promotion. Our employees Occupational Health and Safety and Environment (K3L) aspects is a top priority in DSN Group.

Replanting

The company is committed to consistently renewing its resources in a timely and effective manner by replanting in accordance with best practices using the best oil palm seedlings that are adapted to local land and climatic conditions. Replanting is carried out in accordance with best management practices which means zero burning and retaining as much of the organic matter as possible through the shredding and mulching of Oil Palm trunks and branches onsite.
