Collaboration in an Off-Concessions Forest Conservation Program, DSNG & USAID SEGAR Sign MOU

Jakarta, June 29, 2022 – PT Dharma Satya Nusantara Tbk (“DSNG”, the “Company”) collaborates with the United States Agency for International Development Sustainability Environmental Governance Across Region (USAID SEGAR) in planning and monitoring management of the Off-Concession Conservation Area – OCCA.

Signing of the MoU on the collaboration was held Wednesday, June 29th 2022, which conducted by Chief Sustainability Officer DSNG, Denys Collin Munang and Chief of Party Chemonics International representing USAID SEGAR, Peter Doyle. The signing was witnessed by Nur Hygiawati Rahayu, Director of Forestry and Water Resources Conservation, BAPPENAS, and Mark Newton, the Deputy Director Environment Office of USAID.

Denys Collin Munang conveyed that the OCCA program is one of tangible manifestations of DSNG’s commitment to sustainable palm oil practices. This program is also part of DSNG’s commitment to green investment from & Green, which had been signed on March 2020, to implement a Landscape Protection Plan around the Company’s concession areas.

“This collaboration is an important step for us at DSNG, as we learn how to preserve and protect an area outside of our own concessions. DSNG is very pleased and honored to be able to work with USAID SEGAR in its first Off Concession Conservation Area,” said Denys after the signing.

This collaboration targets two areas that are important for conservation, which are Karangan Dalam Village (3,148 Ha.) and Tepian Langsat Village (395 Ha.) in East Kutai Regency, East Kalimantan Province. The two areas were chosen because of its proximity to the DSNG plantation area, its high conservation value, and high degradation potential. Some areas in the Karangan Dalam and Tepian Langsat Village Forests have even been degraded due to forest and land fires in the past.

This collaboration will last for the period from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2025. The program focuses on three areas, namely the preparation of a Village Forest management plan – including the collection of baselines for the biodiversity and community’s socio-economic conditions; capacity building of Village Forest Management Institutions (LPHD); and joint monitoring and evaluation conducted every six months.

“We will leverage on USAID SEGAR’s experience and technical knowledge to deliver on this important project. On how important this project is, I am reminded by what Jacques Cousteau was once quoted to have said, ‘… For most of history, man has had to fight nature to survive; in this century he is beginning to realize that, in order to survive, he must protect it… ‘” Denys added.

USAID SEGAR is a collaborative program between the governments of Indonesia and the United States to address climate change through sustainable environmental governance across regions.
