DSNG Preparing Its Plan for Climate Action

Jakarta, September 22nd, 2021—The DSN Group (Pt Dharma Satya Nusantara Tbk) today announced it had signed two agreements to begin its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emission Scoping and Climate Risk Assessment with two notable companies that are specialists in the field of emission reduction projects and climate action for businesses and organizations around the world.

This is the beginning of DSNG’s deliberated and structured path towards their Net Zero aspirations with the aim to reduce emissions, adapt to climate change risks and align itself to the efforts of the Government of Indonesia towards meeting its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and the transition to a low carbon and climate resilient future.

“DSNG aspires to thrive in a low carbon economy of the future and be resilient in the face of climate change. As such, this work they are undertaking will most importantly, bring understanding of DSNG’s current performance on GHG emissions and take stock of the current climate risks it faces. This, then provides an objective base from which to launch science-based approaches, that can mitigate or eliminate these emissions and risks.”,” said Datuk Darrel Webber, Chairman of DSNG’s Sustainability Advisory Board.

Key highlights of the GHG Emission Scoping work include identification of major emission sources of scope 1, scope 2 and scope 3 related to DSNG business processes and GHG reduction opportunities across DSNG’s 3 SBUs, subsidiaries, suppliers, and downstream users, setting the GHG accounting boundaries according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol standard, integrating RSPO Palm GHG as well as the Science Based Targets Initiative platforms, where applicable.

Simultaneously, the Climate Risk Assessment of DSNG will include physical and transition risks opportunities assessment, and recommendation on how these risks and opportunities could be integrated into current DSNG’s business strategy.

Pak Denys Munang, the Chief Sustainability Officer of DSNG said that “Our work on climate change is consistent with our Group Sustainability Policy to focus on three key areas: forests, climate and communities. We believe climate change is perhaps the largest existential threat to agriculture around the world and that it makes sense for us to prepare our business to adapt and address the risks associated with it. Beyond this, we hope to be able to work together with stakeholders and civil society on innovative and pragmatic solutions to help address the climate risks we all face.”

DSNG has chosen South Pole to conduct the work on its GHG Emission Scoping, while another leading global sustainability consultancy firm will be leading the work on DSNG’s Climate Risk Assessment, assisted by Asia Biogas.

Agriculture is responsible for 11 % of global emissions, and the use of climate-smart and regenerative agriculture should play a key role in fighting climate change. Over the past 15 years, South Pole’s Agri-Value Chains team has supported some of the largest consumer goods companies in the world in their effort to benchmark best practices around climate action in agriculture. We are delighted to see the same level of ambition and commitment to climate action at DSNG. We work with companies who are serious about taking the necessary steps to play their part and   we trust our niche expertise in the intersection of agriculture and climate change will be instrumental in supporting DSNG’s journey” said Sue Helen Nieto, Deputy Practice Lead, Agri-Value Chains at South Pole.

The GHG Scoping and Climate Risk Assessment work is estimated to take between three to six months to complete as it will involve all the business units in DSNG.
