DSN Group Conducted Tree Planting Program in Celebration of World Environment Day
Muara Wahau, June 8, 2024 – In commemoration of World Environment Day, celebrated every June 5th, DSN Group once again implemented its tree planting program with the community. Held in Huliwa (Wehea Protected Forest), Nehas Liah Bing Village, Muara Wahau Sub-district, East Kutai Regency, the event was attended by various stakeholders and successfully planted 500 trees.
During this event, the community, together with DSN Group, planted various types of trees such as bengkirai, ficus carica (fig), pulai, ulin, meranti, durian, jackfruit, matoa, and rambutan. From 2022 to 2023, DSN Group’s tree planting program has successfully planted over 1,000 trees across various locations.
Sahat M. Purba, Region Head of Muara Wahau, East Kalimantan, explained that the tree planting program, which has been ongoing since 2022, is a joint effort to reforest critical lands. This aims to prevent negative impacts on the community, such as flooding, and to preserve biodiversity in the area, including protecting the protected forest from damage.
“To ensure the sustainability of this program, the company provides operational support for plant maintenance and equips the local community with the necessary knowledge. I thank the various stakeholders who support this activity, and we hope this will become a new habit and culture for the community to continue caring for their forests,” added Sahat.
Ledjie Taq, a local leader and head of the Wehea Protected Forest management, explained that the community greatly appreciates this tree planting program as a joint effort to preserve the Wehea protected forest. Additionally, this program acts as a shield for the community against natural disasters such as floods. He hopes that more stakeholders will contribute to such programs.
Aligned with the company’s commitment, DSN Group operates sustainably, focusing on three main pillars: forests, climate, and community. By the end of 2023, the company had protected high conservation value (HCV) areas within its concession by conducting 168 patrols, covering a total distance of 765 km across 11 blocks and 7 riparian zones, to ensure the protection of these areas.
Furthermore, DSN Group has undertaken Off-Concession Conservation Areas (OCCA) initiatives, protecting 3,148 hectares of Karangan Dalam Village Forest and supporting community livelihoods. Through OCCA, the company ensures the well-being of protected flora and fauna.
